65. Since, then, we are made partakers of Christ and all His benefits by faith only, where does this faith come from?
The Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts by the preaching of the Holy Gospel and confirms it by the use of the holy sacraments.
- Where does Faith come from?
- Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts.
- Faith must be received (Ice Cream and Kids)
- Primary Tool is the Preaching of the Gospel (Rom. 10:13-15)
- Philip, Woman at the Well, Peter, Paul
- Sacraments Confirm and Strengthen our Faith
- Sacraments are Physical gifts as Signs and Seals
- Example: Wedding Ring
- Baptism: Signifies the Washing of our Sins, New Life in Christ
- Sign: Points to the Washing of our Sins, Death to Life in Christ and Belonging to Jesus.
- Waters do not save, Jesus Saves.
- Seal: Authenticity or Guarantee
- Adult Baptism: Public Profession of Faith (Ethiopian Eunuch)
- Infant Baptism: Sign of God’s covenant people
- History of Circumcision (Rom. 4:11 and Gen. 17)
- Children of God’s people were raised to know they belong to God, which baptism is a sign of. (Deut. 6:4 Shema)
- Our children are raised in the home and church to Know Jesus as Lord and Savior.
- Lord’s Supper
- Sign: Points to Jesus’ work on the cross. (Broken Body, and Blood covering our sin)
- New Covenant: You belong to me and are welcome at my table.
- Just like bread nourishes our bodies, Jesus nourishes our souls.
- Survivor (Carter Krull)
- Seal
- Jesus meets us at his table; the blood of Jesus covers is enough.
- Applications of the Sacraments
- Sacraments always point us to Jesus.
- Salvation rest on the work of Jesus, not on our obedience, works, or feelings.
- Sacraments remind us to receive God’s promises.
- Sacraments help us live a life of Gratitude.
Who may come to the table? Those who belong to Jesus through Faith.
