First Reformed Church Leadership
First Reformed Church is blessed to have a leadership team who are truly dedicated to Christ and accomplishing His will. Following are brief bio's of our leadership team and their qualifications for ministry.
Pastor Dan was called to serve First Reformed Church as Senior Pastor in the fall of 1999. Prior to that, he served as pastor of Roseland Reformed Church in Blomkest, Minnesota, and as associate in the Gibbsville Reformed Church, Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin.
Pastor Dan’s role includes preaching and teaching God’s Word, listening and giving counsel, administration, and leadership. He believes the foundation of his ministry is based on his personal relationship with Jesus Christ, his call to pastoral ministry, and being led by the Holy Spirit.
He is a graduate of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois and is currently working on a Doctorate of Ministry at Sioux Falls Seminary.
Pastor Dan is married to Sue and they have three children: Reuben and his wife Ellen; Christina; and Michael.
Family Life & Education Director
Cheryl was appointed to serve at First Reformed Church in the Fall of 1992. Over the past 25 years this staff position has evolved with the changing needs of our congregation. As a staff member, Cheryl has served as Youth Director, Youth and Education Director and now as full-time Youth and Family Life Director.
The attributes that best describe Cheryl and her ministry here at First Reformed Church are strong people skills, leadership development and relational ministry. Cheryl shares Jesus and His love by pouring into people. She meets them where they are and walks with them on their faith journey. Cheryl is an encourager and motivator. She loves to see people get involved in their gifted areas of ministry and supports them in a variety of ways.
Cheryl graduated from South Dakota State University in 1991 with a degree in Human Development/Child and Family Studies.

Pastoral Care Director
Sue started in her position at First Reformed Church in February, 2016. Prior to coming to First Reformed Church, Sue had an extensive career in social work including the areas of foster care, intensive in-home treatment with families, and outpatient therapy with children and adults.
Sue provides pastoral care to our congregation including those with health concerns, the elderly, and the widowed. Sue also provides leadership for the Care Elder program at First Reformed Church by supporting and training 23 Care Elders in our congregation. Sue’s efforts to provide a “ministry of care” are based on her personal faith and her interest in caring for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.
Sue received her undergraduate degree in social work at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. Sue obtained a master’s degree in social work from Jane Addams School of Social Work at the University of Illinois in Chicago, IL.
Sue is married to Pastor Dan Haggar. They are the parents of Reuben and his wife Ellen, Christina, and Michael.
Valerie first started in January of 2013. During that time she has grown into her position here at First Reformed answering phone calls, typing – printing the bulletins and keeping up on the monthly newsletter “The Bridge”. The bookkeeping consists of working closely with Danielle at De Noble’s and Associates coding and mailing the bills and checks as well as making sure the Funds are correct for the deacons. There is always something to do in her role. Kind of an all around help would explain it best instead of listing all of the things she is called on to assist with, which she is happy to do.
Valerie lost her husband of 28 years suddenly in February of 2015 and found great spiritual comfort from the staff and congregation of First Reformed. Valerie remarried on September 22, 2018 to Eddie Buss from Alvord, IA and they now reside in Doon.
Valerie and Eddie attend the Methodist Church in Doon. She has 3 grown children (Brandon, Joel, & Danielle) and 3 beautiful grandchildren (Tori, Edison, & Bailey) for which she is grateful.

She believes that instilling a strong faith in children when they are young is crucial to their faith as adults and is passionate about making connections and growing relationships among the congregation. Amy’s desire and goal is to make every child feel like they belong to a bigger community – a community of love and trust – and to teach them how to share their faith with others.
