8/2/2026                                        Sanctification                                       2 Peter 1:1-8

Intro: Review of Justification

Q #86 Since we have been delivered from our misery by grace alone through Christ, without any merit of our own, why must we yet do good works?

A #86 Because Christ, having redeemed us by his blood, also renews us by his Holy Spirit to be his image, so that with our whole life we may show ourselves thankful to God for his benefits, and he may be praised by us. Further, that we ourselves may be assured of our faith by its fruits, and that by our godly walk of life we may win our neighbors for Christ.

2 Peter 1:1-8

  1. Simon Peter, a Servant and apostle of Jesus Christ. (Vs 1)
    1. Mistakes
      1. Rebuking Jesus (Called Satan), Transfiguration, Denying Jesus

  1. God doesn’t give up on Peter
    1. Resurrected Jesus appears to Peter, Pentecost (3000), Apostle (2 Letters)

  1. Letter Written to Christians (Vs 2)
    1. Those who are Justified through faith in Christ.

  1. Sanctification Vs.3-8

Sanctification is a lifelong process by which God makes us more like Jesus. (Rom. 8:29)

  1. Filled with the Holy Spirit (Vs 3)
    1. Divine power to live a Godly life (ability to do all that God has called you to do.)

  1. Eternal Dynamic Relationship with God.
    1. Given new heart, made alive, capacity to grow.
    2. Difference between knowing God and knowing about God.

  1. Active Participation
    1. Abiding with Jesus (John 15)
      1. Intimate knowledge of God’s Word
      2. Surrounded by God’s People
      3. Consistently in God’s Presence (Prayer and Worship)
      4. Mortified by my Sin
        1. Along with the Holy Spirit, drive out sin from my life.
      5. Recognized evidence of fruit and supplement growth
        1. Thankfulness to God
