Sermon Outline

WHO HAS THE RIGHT TO JUDGE?

Introduction: The Apostle Paul continues to build the case that all human beings stand in need of a savior. After describing the suppressing and replacing the truth with lies he argues that those who self-righteously judge others are also guilty before God.

  • I.GOD’S JUDGEMENT IS INESCAPABLE
  • A.The Problem with Self-Righteousness
  • Accuse others and excuse themselves (v. 1)
  • Measure with the wrong standard (v. 2)
  • Judging others does not put them in a better position (v. 3)
  • Misinterpret God’s blessings (v. 4)
  • B.The Myth of Moral Superiority
  • II.GOD’S JUDGEMENT IS RIGHTEOUS (vv. 5-11)
  • A.God Judges Based On Truth (v. 2)
  • B.What Will Be Judged:
  • Self-righteousness and hypocrisy
  • Stubborn, unrepentant heart
  • Behavior (deeds)
  • Rejection of the truth and following evil
  • Disobedience to the divine law
  • Secret thoughts
  • III.GOD’S JUDGEMENT IS IMPARTIAL (vv. 12-16)
  • A.The Jew Will Be Judged According to Revealed Law
  • B.The Gentile Will Be Judged According to their Conscience

Conclusion: Paul is developing the case that all human beings are guilty before God and that God’s judgements are just. He is preparing us to be ready to hear and receive the Gospel message about Jesus Christ.
