THE ROOT OF OUR CONFLICTS

James 4:1-10

Introduction:   There are four types of conflict in life:  conflict within ourselves, with other people, with nature, and with God.  James challenges us to discern the causes, consequences and strategy to manage human conflict and overcome them.

  1. THE DIAGNOSTIC:  INTERNAL DESIRES (vv. 1-3)
  1. Distorted Desires
  1. Anger is always a secondary emotion
  2. Fight/quarrel/destroy
  1. Wrong Motives
  1. THE CONSEQUENCES:  OUTWARD SYMPTOMS (vv. 2-4)
  1. Enmity with God
  2. Conflict with Others
  3. Friendship with the World
  4. The Desire to Control
  1. THE STRATEGY TO OVERCOME:  HUMILITY AND GRACE (vv. 6-10)
  1. Submit to God (v. 7a)
  2. Resist the Devil (v. 7b)
  3. Grow Closer to God (v. 8)
  4. Repent (v. 8-9)
  5. Humble Yourself (v. 10)

Conclusion:   The solution to conflict is not just found in external tactic but having God at work straightening the distorted desires and tangled up motives of those who humble themselves before Him.
