LOVING THOSE WHO HURT YOU

Romans 12:14-21

Introduction:The guiding principle for today’s theme is Romans 12:1-2:“Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”The focus is on personal relationships and how to overcome evil done to us.

I.RESTRAIN REVENGE (v. 17a)

A.Reject Retaliation

1.So not repay evil for evil

2.Do not “curse” your enemy (v. 14)

B.Leave Room for God’s Wrath (v. 19)

1.God settle the account

2.Our response to hurt is a test of faith

II.DO THE RIGHT THING (v. 17b)

A.Do Good

1.Compassion toward our enemies (v. 20)

2.“Heaping coals on their heads” (v. 20)

B.Seek Peace with Everyone (v. 18)

III.OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD (v. 21)

A.Not Just Endure but Overcome

B.Breaking the Cycle of Evil

Conclusion:This is a supremely radical teaching because it is counter-cultural and unnatural to our sinful nature. The cross of Jesus Christ is our example for relating to those who hurt us.

“But to you who are listening I say:Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”Luke 6:27-28
