HOW TO BE WISE WITH WEALTH

James 5:1-6

Introduction:   God is not opposed to wealth.  But God is opposed to the misuse and abuse of wealth.  James teaches us four major dimensions of wisdom with money.

  1. THE WRONG USES OF WEALTH
  1. The Hoarding of Wealth (v. 3)
  2. The Dishonest Gain of Wealth (v. 4)
  3. The Self-Indulgence of Wealth (v. 5)
  4. The Manipulation of Others with Wealth (v. 6)
  1. THE GODLY USES OF WEALTH
  1. Save Faithfully (Proverbs 21:20)
  1. Live on less than you make
  2. Saving helps control spending (10% - 10% - 80% Principle)
  1. Make Honestly(Proverbs 16:8; 14:23)
  1. The value of hard work
  2. Qualifications for how much you make:
    • Does not hurt your health (Prov. 23:4)
    • Does not hurt relationships/family (Prov. 21:20)
    • Does not hurt your relationship with God (3 John 2)
  1. Spend Wisely (Proverbs 21:5; 27:23)

                                                The Key:  Planned Spending (budget)

  1. Give Generously (Proverbs 11:24-25)
  1. Tithe (1 Cor. 16:2)
  2. Store up treasure in heaven (Matthew 6:20; 16:9)

Conclusion:   Unmanaged finances is a symptom of an unmanaged life.  What James is describing is stewardship of what God gives us.  The Lord wants us to be financially free.
