CHURCH, IS IT REALLY IMPORTANT?

Deuteronomy 7:6; Matthew 16:13-20

Introduction: Many who profess to be Christian feel they don’t need to be involved with the Christian church. But to be a follower of Jesus is to automatically be part of his church, His family. We cannot live the Christian life without one another.

  • I.WE NEED THE CHURCH TO BE A FOLLOWER OF JESUS

  • A.The Church is a Spiritual Necessity

  • Interdependent on one another
  • Spiritual life takes place in a community of acceptance
  • We witness to the world together with integrity

  • B.The Actual Practice of Many

  • Optional
  • Individualistic and private
  • Isolated and Segregated
  • Hypocrisy

  • II.GOD DESIRES A PEOPLE/FAMILY

  • A.God Chooses Israel to be His People

  • 1.Abraham, Isaac, Jacob
  • 2.A “remnant”

  • B.God Sends His Son to Gather a People

  • 1.Jesus establishes and builds His church
  • 2.Foundation of Peter’s confession (Matthew 16: 16-19)
  • 3.The work of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor.12:13)

  • III.THE NATURE OF THE CHURCH

  • 1.A holy, chosen, possession
  • 2.Universal Church and unity
  • 3.Local church and ministry

  • B.Koinonia:fellowship/community”

  • 1.Participation in the life of the church
  • 2.Light; unity; acceptance; sharing; suffering; the Lord’s Supper

Conclusion: We all need the church to follow Jesus, to stay alive spiritually, to grow, to be equipped for the mission and display God’s glory.
