WHERE THE CHRISTMAS STORY BEGINS

Genesis 6:5-8

Introduction: In the book of Romans the Apostle Paul explains our relationship in God in legal terms (righteousness, judgement, justification, mercy and grace). In Genesis 6 we see the personal pain and grief of God toward human evil.

  • I.GOD CREATED US FOR LOVE
  • A.The Great Commandment (Dt. 6:4-5; Mt. 22:37-40)
  • 1.Obedience to God is not a technical submission to rules
  • 2.Obedience to God is rooted in a love for God
  • B.Legalism is Obeying God Without Love
  • II.THE GREATEST EVIL IS A FAILURE TO LOVE GOD
  • A.Substitute Loves
  • 1.If we do not love the Creator we will love/worship something else
  • 2.The Idolatry of Self
  • B.Every Inclination Towards Evil
  • 1.Stepping over the boundaries
  • 2.Take what is good and corrupt it to selfish ends
  • C.The Heart of God is Grieved
  • III.GOD MAKES A PROMISE
  • A.“I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created…” v. 7
  • B.“But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” v. 8
  • C.God Makes a Covenant (Promise) Genesis 9:8-17)

Conclusion: The Christmas story has it’s beginning in the promises of the Lord God in the beginnings of human life. God does for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
