Sermon Outline
FORGIVENESS AND THE FOOTHOLD OF SATAN
Ephesians 4:20-32
Introduction: The story of the Bible is one of conflict between God and Satan, truth and lie, good and evil. As image bearers of God, we are the battle ground of this conflict (Revelation 12:17).
- THE BATTLEGROUND IS THE HUMAN HEART
- We Experience the Spiritual Conflict on Three Fronts
- In Our Sinful Natures
- In the Values of the World
- From Satan and the Demonic
- Jesus Ransoms Us from Bondage Through the Cross and Resurrection
- EVERYONE GETS WOUNDED IN THIS CONFLICT
- We Are Hurt By “Natural” Evil And “Moral” Evil
- How We Respond to Our Woundedness Is the Test of Our Faith
- Anger is a natural reaction to being sinned against
- What we do with our anger is crucial to our living a victorious life
- “…and do not give the devil a foothold.”
- THE PRACTICE FORGIVENESS AS A SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE
- Three Possibilities: Be Stuck; Become Bitter; Be Liberated
- Forgiveness: A Decision followed by a Process
- “…Just As in Christ God Forgave You.” Ephesians 4:32
- Experience the Pain: Feel your anger and grieve (v. 26)
- Cancel the Debt (don’t hold the offense over the offender)
- Resist Revenge
- Do Good rather than Evil (Romans 12:17-21)
- Be open to Reconciliation
Conclusion: Being free from Satan’s negative influence in our lives requires forgiveness. The good news is if we are stuck or bitter, we can always change direction and choose the journey of forgiveness.
